Some Facts about TOR-HB Disinfectant

Ever wonder if you are using the chamber disinfectant properly?  Do you know what the contact time (kill time for pathogens, micro-organisms, etc.) is for your disinfectant?  When you are running back to back treatments and are short on time, are you just spraying and wiping the gurney down? If so, you should be aware that it takes between 30 seconds, 10 minutes, and up to 30 minutes to kill some pathogens and micro-organisms.

Contact time: The time it takes for your disinfectant to kill pathogens and micro-organisms on the spot.  This requires you to leave the solution or the sprayed area alone for that specified amount of time.

TOR-HB (Made by Ecolab) Contact times:

HIV – 30 seconds

HCV – Hepatitis C Virus – 10 Minutes

HBV – Hepatitis B Virus – 10 Minutes

Cytomegalovirus –  10 Minutes

Enterococcus faecalis – Vacomycin Resistant (VRE) – 10 Minutes

Staphylococcus aureus – Methicillin Resistant (MRSA) – 10 Minutes

Pseudomonas aeruginosa – 10 Minutes

Herpes simplex type 2 virus – 10 Minutes

Serratia marcescens – 10 Minutes

Acinetobacter calcoaceticus var. iwoffi – 10 Minutes

Streptococcus pyogenes – 10 Minutes

Salmonella choleraesuis – 10 Minutes

Polio Virus Type 1 – 30 Minutes

Whew!!! Try spelling all that just once.  The point I am trying to make here is that we do treat patients with at least one of these bugs (at least MRSA and VRE) and could possibly expose your next HBO patient/s to these bugs especially if they are immunosuppressed if the chamber and gurney are not properly disinfected.

Many thanks to those that participated in Operation Neptune’s Spear!!!

Operation Neptune's Spear

I know this post has nothing to do with hyperbaric medicine but I would like to give a big thank you to those that participated in Operation Neptune’s Spear.  It is folks like this that help us all sleep better at night.  Knowing that they are out there risking their lives and doing what has to be done in order to keep us safe is a tough job and we as Americans definitely appreciate the sacrifices they make daily.
